A Smart Power Grid with distributed generation is critical for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. However, the power converters and circuit breakers used in power grid require to operate at high operating voltage, high power density and high junction temperature. The power systems built with silicon devices are very bulky and inefficient, making their use difficult in practical Power Grid systems. The development of high voltage power devices based on SiC will be a critical development in building a Power Grid with distributed and fluctuating sources of power generation. The excellent performance of SiC power devices will make the electric equipment in small size, higher efficiency, lower overall cost for the generation, transmission and distribution of electric power in the Power Grid system.
